An American vocalist, voice coach and teaching artist born in Germany and raised near Chicago, a city known for its vibrant musical landscape, Marcya was introduced to a world of musical possibilities early on in life. Her family’s rich musical heritage consisted of jazz, gospel, country western, and soul music. Each note and melody echoed the legacy of generations past. This rich tapestry of influences allowed Marcya to develop a sound that is contemporary and deeply rooted in the traditions of some of the great vocalists who came before her. Women such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Carmen McRae and Nancy Wilson are but a few of the divas who have informed Marcya’s personal singing style. She has a deep love for music and remarkable versatility across genres. Her music is a tribute to her influences, yet distinctly her own, characterized by a soulful blend of emotion, technique, and authenticity.
Marcya’s formal education in piano and voice laid the groundwork for her success as a teaching artist and performer. Marcya excelled in classical voice competitions, demonstrating her exceptional talent and dedication. However, during her transformative years in New York City, she discovered her affinity for jazz, a genre that significantly influenced her artistic expression. The energetic and improvisational nature of jazz resonated with her, allowing her to explore her creativity in exciting new ways.
Marcya is known for her captivating stage presence and tasteful phrasing, as she connects deeply with her audiences through her performances. She has performed at notable venues in Chicago, New York and Milwaukee as a soloist and supporting vocalist. Some of Marcya’s most memorable performances were at Freedom Hall, Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts, and the Rose Theater. Marcya has enjoyed residencies at Blu in the Pfister Hotel and the Ambassador Chicago. She performed frequently at Caffe Cielo (NYC) and Saint Kate the Arts Hotel (Milwaukee). Marcya has performed at Summerfest, Jazz in the Park, and Washington Park Wednesdays.
In addition to her performance career, Marcya is a passionate teaching artist who believes in the transformative power of music education. She shares her vast knowledge with students throughout Wisconsin, creating an environment where aspiring musicians can develop their skills and discover their unique voices. Marcya teaches voice privately and maintains teaching affiliations with Brookfield Academy, the Milwaukee Jazz Institute, and the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes music as a form of self-expression and a vehicle for personal growth, motivating her students to embrace their creativity in the ways most meaningful to them.
Marcya is a featured vocalist on stylistically diverse projects ranging from House Music to traditional jazz. Her debut CD, “Keeping it Simple,” produced by acclaimed jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, showcases her ability to combine her traditional classical training with her love for jazz, resulting in a fresh, authentic sound that resonates with listeners.
Academically, Marcya holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Roosevelt University, with voice performance credentials from the Chicago Musical College and has pursued graduate studies at the University of Iowa. This strong educational background enriches her approach to performance and teaching, allowing her to bring a thoughtful and analytical perspective to her
work.
